What will Don Brewer be Reading in September

This year students will be hanging on to there seats while predicting,

making inference and visualizing some of the most action -packed

cliffhanger stories. Stories like "One Minute to Midnight"

"The Runaway Monster," and "Wolf in the Hood." These

up dated stories should prove to be very entertaining

and intriguing.

We will also continue reading the Superintendent's Book

of the Month. His book correlates with a character

trait.

During Plant Day this year, you will find us discovering

about American folklore as we talk about characters

such as, Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, John

Henry and many more.

What is Merrill Road Reading

What are we Reading in September...

At Merrill Road this year, we will be reading Across America.

We start our adventure in Boston, Massachusetts where we will meet Robert McCloskey. His book Make way for Ducklings was inspired by the ducks in the Boston Public Garden. Once he decided to develop the story, the author learned all he could about mallards. He even bought ducks at a market, so he could observe them and follow them around. Imagine having ducks living in your bathtub!

Our second stop will be in Maine where Barbara Cooney the author of Miss Rumphius

heard stories about an elderly woman who supposedly lived in the area. This woman was

known for throwing out lupine seeds wherever she went. This "Lupine Lady" was given credit

for the fields of lupines scattered all around that part of the country. Mrs. Cooney pulled

from this character and her own experiences and travels to write this intriguing book

Miss Rumphius.

MERRILL ROAD SCHOOL ONLY:

This year we are trying something different. It is called a Birthday Club. The purpose of this

club is two fold. One to recognize students on their birthdays and give them a special connection with books that are placed in the Media Center and the second reason is to help increase our collection of books.

This is how it works. Parents will donate $15 dollars in their child's name. The Media Specialist will then purchase books for what we will call a Birthday Shelf. When the Child's birthday arrives the Media Specialist allows that students to choose a book off the shelf to be placed in the Media Center. The book will have a special inscription that will have the child's name placed in the book for generation of library users to see. The child will also be the first to check out the book and enjoy it at home.
